Texas CDL — test facts & training hub
Texas follows the national CDL model: the same knowledge tests, the same lengths, and the same 80% pass mark as every other state — plus one test that is pure Texas. Start with the facts, then train.

The Texas-only test: Section 14 — Special Requirements
Texas adds its own pass/fail knowledge test drawn from Section 14 of the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook — state rules on vehicle size and weight limits, lighting and warning devices, mud flaps, turn-signal distance, and other Texas-specific requirements. It is a separate exam from General Knowledge, and most national prep sites barely mention it. Pass-Ready has a dedicated Section 14 bank and simulator.
Good to know in Texas
- English-only testing: Texas CDL knowledge tests are administered in English only (in effect since June 1, 2026). Study aids in Spanish remain legal — our bilingual edition in production presents questions in English with explanations in Spanish, so you prepare for the test as it is actually given.
- Fees and scheduling: Texas DPS fees and appointment rules change from time to time. Check the current figures in the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook and on the official DPS site before you go — we won't guess a number that decides your day.
- The manual is free: the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook is published by DPS at no cost and is the source our questions are written from.
